A recent article I came across discusses CCTV surveillance and the law to protect those who use it from not getting into too much trouble.
Although the CCTV system is in place to protect us there are rules and requirements that go along with using the CCTV surveillance systems.
The 1998 Data Protection Act is one that everyone who is thinking about installing a CCTV surveillance system should familiarize them self with. It outlines all the important dos and don’ts of the system and things we should watch out for while using the system.
While most CCTV companies who install the systems for you will consult you on all the legal factors you need to know, it is always wise to read up on the technology and make sure you understand all the responsibility that goes along with having a CCTV surveillance system, for example if you use your CCTV system in a public or commercial space you will have to register the camera with the local police and have signs up informing individuals of the surveying cameras. The rules and regulations mostly apply when the camera is in a public space and not just private land, this is just to protect other people’s privacy that are not doing anything wrong and were just at the wrong place at the wrong time.
So, look at the rules and regulations just so you don’t find yourselves caught in an awkward situation.
